HelloRoam, an eSIM travel connectivity provider, today released a 2026 travel cost comparison outlining how eSIM technology may help international travelers reduce mobile data expenses compared with traditional carrier roaming plans.

The report examines common roaming costs from major U.S. wireless carriers and compares them with publicly available eSIM data plan pricing for popular international destinations. According to HelloRoam’s analysis, travelers using eSIM data plans may be able to reduce mobile data costs significantly, depending on destination, carrier plan, data usage and device compatibility.

International roaming remains a major cost consideration for travelers. AT&T’s International Day Pass is priced at $12 per day, while Verizon TravelPass is priced at $10 per day. Based on those rates, a two-week international trip may cost approximately $168 through AT&T or $140 through Verizon before considering other plan terms or usage limitations. The Federal Communications Commission advises travelers to review their mobile plans before international travel to avoid unexpected roaming charges.

HelloRoam’s comparison highlights the price difference between daily roaming plans and destination-specific eSIM data plans. For example, a 10GB eSIM plan for Japan may be available from eSIM providers starting around $15.99 to $18.00, while a two-week carrier roaming plan can cost substantially more depending on the traveler’s wireless provider.

The report also reviews European eSIM pricing. HelloRoam’s analysis found examples of 10GB plans for Germany starting at approximately $12.74 and Italy starting at approximately $16.84, with selected plans averaging about $1.44 per gigabyte across reviewed destinations. Pricing was reviewed as of May 2026 and may vary by provider, destination, plan size and promotional availability.

“Many travelers still rely on daily roaming passes because they are familiar, but eSIM technology gives them another option to review before departure,” said Aqib Hassan, CTO and Co-founder at Hello Roam. “Our 2026 comparison is intended to help travelers understand how eSIM plans work, what they may cost and what factors should be checked before choosing a travel data solution.”

An eSIM is a digital SIM that is built into many modern smartphones. Instead of inserting a physical SIM card, travelers can activate a data plan digitally, often by scanning a QR code or completing setup through a provider’s online interface. Once activated, the eSIM connects to a supported local or regional network in the destination country.

The report notes that eSIM adoption has continued to grow as more devices include built-in support. More than 300 smartphone models support eSIM, including every iPhone model since the iPhone XS. Apple removed the physical SIM tray from U.S. iPhone models beginning with the iPhone 14, accelerating consumer awareness of digital SIM technology.

HelloRoam’s analysis also compares common eSIM provider models. Airalo offers coverage in more than 200 countries. Holafly provides unlimited daily plans that may suit heavier data users. Saily entered the market in 2024. HelloRoam, launched in 2025, offers both fixed data packages and unlimited daily plans through a web-based platform and mobile app, giving travelers the flexibility to manage their eSIM service without requiring an app download.

Pricing among eSIM providers varies by country and plan type. A 10GB Japan plan may range from about $15.99 on the lower end to approximately $28 from premium providers. European plans show similar variation. Airalo commonly prices many destination plans at around $2 per gigabyte, while Holafly’s unlimited daily plans may range from about $5 to $8 per day depending on destination and duration. Saily and HelloRoam are positioned near the budget segment in several high-traffic destinations, with selected per-gigabyte prices under $1.50.

The report also outlines practical considerations for travelers. Device compatibility should be checked before purchase, as older phones may not support eSIM. Some devices may be locked to a carrier, which can limit eSIM use. Coverage may also vary in remote areas depending on the local network used by the eSIM provider.

For many travelers, eSIM technology allows the home phone number to remain active while travel data runs through a separate digital plan. This can allow calls and texts on the primary number to continue while mobile data is used through the travel eSIM, subject to the user’s carrier settings and device configuration.

HelloRoam expects continued eSIM adoption in 2026 as smartphone manufacturers, mobile carriers and travelers become more familiar with digital SIM activation. The company said the largest barrier for many travelers remains awareness, as many users continue to purchase daily roaming passes without comparing eSIM alternatives.
