Study Concludes Markdown is Ineffective for AI Citations

PHOENIX, AZComprehensive analysis of 4.3 million crawler requests shows major frontier bots never request Markdown, leaving Cloudflare Markdown for Agents with zero impact on AI search citations.

Comprehensive analysis of 4.3 million crawler requests shows major frontier bots never request Markdown, leaving Cloudflare Markdown for Agents with zero impact on AI search citations.

AnswerShare, the pioneer of the AI Translation Layer released findings from a new study demonstrating that serving Markdown content via tools like Cloudflare Markdown for Agent has no impact on frontier AI crawler behavior, search engine citations, or recommendations.

Despite claims from industry experts that Markdown solves HTML bloat and makes pages easier for AI to ingest, the study shows that major frontier bots simply do not request Markdown format.

Methodology and Findings

Leveraging an active weekly crawl volume of approximately 1.5 million requests across multiple edge-controlled domains, the study conducted a rigorous, data-driven evaluation.

The first phase of the experiment tested whether wildcard accept headers (such as the complex header sent by OpenAI’s GPTBot) would trigger Markdown delivery.

Testing with 20,000 crawler simulations confirmed that Cloudflare only serves Markdown when it is explicitly requested in the headers via ‘Accept: text/markdown’.

The second phase analyzed a sample of 4,300,723 real-world requests across five domains to determine how often frontier crawlers request Markdown. Out of those requests, only 108,736 (about 2.5%) requested Markdown. Crucially, the frontier bots responsible for the vast majority of AI search traffic never requested Markdown:

  • PerplexityBot: 605,811 observations – 0 Markdown requests
  • Meta-ExternalAgent: 359,222 observations – 0 Markdown requests
  • GPTBot: 260,472 observations – 0 Markdown requests
  • OAI-SearchBot: 33,631 observations – 0 Markdown requests
  • ClaudeBot: 18,831 observations – 0 Markdown requests

In contrast, only specific specialized or unclassified crawlers requested Markdown:

  • ExaSearchBot: 67,578 requests (99.02%)
  • ShapBot: 3,588 requests (100%)
  • Unclassified bots: 4,615 requests
  • Claude-User Impersonators: 248 requests
  • GoogleBot impersonators: 32,747 requests

Implications for GEO/AEO

‘While we didn’t study every markdown solution, at least for Cloudflare Agent Markdown, there is zero impact to frontier behavior, citation, or recommendation,’ Maynard concluded. “While we didn’t look at all markdown services, the result for Cloudflare is clear.” said Robert Maynard, Founder of AnswerShare. “They built the pipe, but major AI crawlers aren’t using the faucet. Until AI labs update their scrapers to request text/markdown, enabling the feature yields no real-world impact on frontier AI indexing.

While automated Markdown translation fails to influence key crawlers, organizations looking to meaningfully impact AI engine behavior must look to more direct solutions, such as those provided by AnswerShare.

Manifests, logs and methodology are available at AnswerShare Research.

Riverponds Global Capital, a Boston-based investment research and strategy firm focused on multi-asset analysis and structured investment approaches, today announced plans to increase its investment in technology research and development during the fourth quarter of 2026.

The planned expansion will focus on strengthening Riverponds Global Capital’s quantitative research infrastructure, artificial intelligence capabilities, cross-market data analytics, and risk-management systems. The initiative is intended to support the firm’s ongoing development of technology-enabled investment research and improve the efficiency, consistency, and scalability of its decision-making processes across global markets.

Riverponds Global Capital integrates quantitative modeling, artificial intelligence, and multi-market research into its investment research framework. The firm focuses on areas including global asset allocation, technology and financial markets, semiconductor-related industries, digital assets, and multi-strategy investment research.

Riverponds Global Capital said its next stage of development will place greater emphasis on the technology infrastructure supporting its research process. As global markets become increasingly interconnected and data-intensive, the firm plans to continue investing in quantitative systems, artificial intelligence, and risk analytics to strengthen its research capabilities and maintain a disciplined, adaptive investment framework.

During the fourth quarter, Riverponds Global Capital expects to allocate additional resources to several areas of technology development, including AI-assisted market analysis, quantitative model optimization, data-processing infrastructure, automated risk monitoring, and research tools designed to evaluate opportunities across multiple asset classes.

The firm also plans to enhance the integration of macroeconomic data, market signals, and sector-specific information within its internal research environment. Riverponds Global Capital expects these efforts to support more systematic analysis of equities, technology supply chains, digital assets, and cross-border market opportunities.

The technology investment is part of Riverponds Global Capital’s broader institutional development strategy for 2024–2026. The firm traces the development of its digital research framework to 2018, when its core team began building an online research architecture focused on global macroeconomic analysis and quantitative strategy testing. Between 2021 and 2023, the team continued to develop and test its quantitative models across periods of elevated market volatility. Since 2024, Riverponds Global Capital has expanded its institutional operations and global research capabilities.

Riverponds Global Capital said the fourth-quarter investment will prioritize long-term research capacity rather than short-term product expansion. The company will continue to emphasize data-driven analysis, disciplined risk management, and the application of technology to multi-asset investment research.
